Where to Spend a Couple Nights near Lisbon Airport that isn't Lisbon?

So we have a trip to Portugal planned for late September, and now that we are working on an itinerary, we are strongly considering the idea of dropping the Algarve region and instead spending some time in Madeira. However, we are flying in and out of Lisbon (where I live this seems to be the only option - even flights to Porto basically have you going through Lisbon anyways) and the timing of Madeira flights is not ideal (we would basically have to follow our red-eye into Lisbon by waiting 6 hours until the next flight), so we think the best bet is break it up. Current idea is spend time in Lisbon, then pick up a car and check out Evora, Nazare, Coimbra, and the Douro Valley before ditching the car for a couple days in Porto, then taking a flight to Madeira from there to spend 5-7 days on the island.

I was wondering if anyone had ideas of where to hang out once we fly back to the Lisbon airport for 1 or 2 nights until we have to go home that wasn't just staying in Lisbon proper again. Would there be enough of a neighbourhood to hang out past the daytrippers and spend a night or 2 in Sintra or Cascais? Is there anywhere else in the region I don't know about?

I'm spending a few nights in Sintra after a Rick Steves tour. I was originally planning to move closer to the Lisbon airport for the last night, but my Sintra lodging assured me getting to the airport was not difficult.

The advantage of staying overnight is that you can see the place after the day tourists leave.
Do you prefer the beach ( Cascais) or the mountain (Sintra)?
Sintra has the palaces but my vote would be for the beach.
In September the beaches are less crowded and the water is still warmer (not as warm as the Caribbean but warm for the Atlantic).
Cascais and Estoril beaches are nice but my favorite is Carcavelos however the town doesn't have tourist facilities.

I would also vote for Sintra for your last nights before heading home. It's way better with at least one overnight compared to day tripping, and there's tons to do there. Other places that would make good bases for 1-2 nights are quite a bit farther away from the Lisbon airport and wouldn't be practical.

Technically Lisbon, but the Oriente station area has a good Moxy Hotel, and is two stations down from Airport. Flixbus goes from by the station to Evora and others, trains to Sintra, and you have the Parque das Nacoes available next to the station area (good restaurant and modern area). This area feels very different to being in Lisbon itself.

Would allow you to take bus to Evora and use the car to add more time between Lisbon and Porto such as Mafra and Obidos, or near Porto at Aviero, Guimaraes or Braga (latter two are 30 minutes from Porto by car - car return avoids Porto area as airport return on north side)
