I am looking to rent a car as we leave Porto and return it a week later in Lisbon. We will already be in Porto so was thinking better to not rent at the airport.
There are two choices on Auto-Europe- the railroad station or downtown. Does anyone know whether one or the other would be easier to drive out of town from?

Depends on the exact location of the rental agency.
The A20 Highway is almost beside Campanhã train station, further south the A20 connects with the A1 to Lisbon.
The A1 goes through Porto on the western side of the city.

As I understand it, there's still quite a bit of metro construction around town, including Sao Bento. I would take the extra hour to go out to the airport (on the aforementioned metro), pick up the car, and head out of town from there. The Porto airport car rental/return access is easy. Driving in Porto is hard enough. Driving in Porto with heaps of road closures and construction would max out my anxiety meter in about a minute.

More info: we are driving to the Douro Valley and returning the car to Lisbon not Porto.
We have gone to the airport to rent cars in Athens but had not thought of Porto as being as difficult to drive in as Athens. Of course, I haven’t been to Porto yet!
