My husband and I will be in Portugal the last 2 weeks in May. We have figured out our itinerary and made hotel reservations - but we will be traveling by bus and train, and I would like to know when I should make reservations. First week in May? Earlier? I don't want to make them any sooner than necessary, in case we have to cancel our trip (elderly family member). Thanks for your suggestions.
Can't advise you on bus.

For trains:
1. Train Tix are pretty cheap especially those exchangeable but not refundable fares. (Needs to be booked 5 to 8 days in advance)
We booked tickets only previous evening to get maximum flexibility
Fast trains require reservations but regional trains do not
The local city buses and commuter trains don't require reservations.
The advantages of booking long distance train and buses are the ticket discounts, seat selection and availability.
Since you might cancel the trip wait until you are sure you're traveling.
