What to wear - Lisbon and Porto

Not me. My husband. I'm all set. But I just saw that he's basically packing shorts and sandals. One pair of black jeans for evening. So my question is :

Do (senior) men wear shorts in the city much? We haven't been in Europe (obviously) for a few years, but I wonder about the shorts. I think he's better off with fewer shorts and adding some light Dockers and certainly at least a pair of sneakers. Maybe a cotton sweater, it could be cool.

Advice welcome!

You and your husband should wear what makes you comfortable, regardless of what local seniors wear. Yes Europeans of a certain age are less likely to wear shorts, even with high temperatures, but if you prefer to wear shorts they won't care at all.
A more important issue is when you are going to Portugal. If you are going this month, the month of May on the Portuguese coast is not that scorching hot. Temperatures are in the 20s Celsius (70s F) during the day, and in the 10s C (high 50s/low 60s F) in the evening. More importantly both Lisbon and Porto have constant strong Ocean winds, just like here in San Francisco, so, like San Francisco, it's not often that hot (even in Summer). So keeping that in mind, wear what you like.

Thanks, Roberto. We're leaving tomorrow, so I packed for myself figuring on 60s and 70s, maybe low 80s. Just to have some flexibility, I think he ought to throw in a pair of Dockers and his feet might like a pair of sneakers. I didn't really think about the wind, but the comparison to San Francisco is very helpful. It was cooler there than I expected when we visited, mostly because of the breeze.

Good advice, thanks again.

Thanks, papaliak! Good to know. Also good to know about eating outdoors, I want to do that as much as possible. I'm concerned about testing positive for COVID before returning home and having to stay (I'm packing extras of my meds just in case). So I'm going to use masks more than I have been, and eating outside is better (and I like the people watching anyway!).
