I will be on a cruise that is stopping in Ponta Delgada on Saturday, May 4. The ship docks from noon to 8pm. It seems that all of the tours are filled so I was wondering what I could do by myself in this city. Is it possible to hire a taxi to take me on a tour of the city or should I just walk the city by myself? I'm really into history and museums and eating local foods/drinks. I have no idea what this city has to offer so I thought I would start here to see what you all recommend.

There are at least two beautiful squares with churches a short walk from the cruise terminal. Also the military museum in a former fort just west of the harbor. The sidewalks are made of basalt with limestone decoration. You'll probably have time for a short trip out of the city if you want. We visited a pineapple plantation nearby, I didn't find it very interesting but others did. Look for a guidebook on Portugal that has a chapter on the Azores.
We've stopped in Ponta Delgada on a couple of repositioning cruises. It's a pretty quiet city, and we just got out and walked around the downtown area for awhile. I'd be more inclined to partake of the drinks more than of the food. It's a pretty green, lush island.
I sent you a private message with information. Ponta Delgada is a beautiful, small city. Carl
We walked around and especially enjoyed the plaza right near the port. Very interesting church there.
Thanks everyone and a big thank you to Carl. Can't wait to read your guide.
