What's the best neighbourhood to stay in Funchal, Madeira Island?

Dear Madeira friends,

Me and my wife have been to Madeira twice before and look forward to our 3rd trip in March 2018.

On our previous visits we have always stayed in the Lido neighbourhood in a high-end apartment rental from Superior Rentals in Madeira. we love sunbathing, going to the beach and swimming in Madeira's immense blue ocean.

But now we're wondering if we should try another area of the city, one that is equally well served by beaches, nice bars and restaurants...

What do you think?

We stayed in Santa Cruz, 5 minutes from the airport. It is a beautiful little village with many restaurants and cafes, a rock beach, and just off the highway. The owner has a 1 bedroom apartment right on the water where you can take a few steps down and go ocean swimming as well as use the pool on the top floor. There are many other rental options in this area

Machico is another nice laid back option. This location as well has many rentals.
