I had been envisioning a trip from Porto to Lisbon for 2024 in mid-April to mid-May, but some forum commentary about large tourist crowds at that time makes me wonder if I should go in February or March instead. I’m trying to balance tourist crowds versus weather conditions. Thanks for your thoughts.
If you are going to the Algarve mid-Apr is not a good time but mid-May is.
We were in Sintra, Lisbon and Caiscai this last part of April first part of May. Sintra was crowded but then the Palace had been closed up until then for strikes or whatever. The crowds were just beginning.
I think if your main objective is see the sights while avoiding huge crowds then going as early in the year as possible will be best, but avoid the Easter period. I don’t know what weather you are used to but Portugal has a very mild climate and it won’t be cold at that time of year.
Late April to early May would be my suggestion. This year was especially crowded earlier but I’m hoping that was pent up travel urges after the pandemic. If you go in February, rain is more likely and heat in your accommodations might be an issue. Late March might be ok. As mentioned earlier, avoid the week before and after Easter, as many Spanish come to Portugal during the Easter school break.
Certain places, like Sintra, are going to be crowded no matter what time of the year!
Thanks for your reply Kathryn. That is the information I was seeking. Easter will be on March 31 next year, so I’ve learned to avoid that week. Seems like April-May should be about right. Thanks.
It’s so hard to balance crowds and weather. I have my trip planned for mid-March, planning around Easter and school holidays as mentioned by kathrynj. I’d rather risk poorer weather and have less crowds (hopefully). So, that’s why I decided on March.
Also, you might find cheaper prices in March. I got a great deal on airfare ($980 for “comfort” seats).
