My wife has been discussing purchase of jewelry with a store in Lisbon and they've offered the following service.
We only pay the amount without VAT and they put a separate hold on the credit card for the VAT amount. Their processor, Planet, will have an employee meet us at the airport and expedite the Customs stamping. After that, the credit card hold is released.

That must be quite a purchase you are making, that they would send someone to the airport to walk you through.
It is not that big a purchase and the offer was frankly a surprise.
My sense was that the Planet employees are already at the airport, probably manning their VAT Refund counter, and only have to synchronize with us.
