US dropping requirement for covid tests on Sunday?

Some media reporting this morning that as of Sunday, CDC will drop requirement that travelers to US need a covid test to enter. The requirement may be reinstated in 90 days depending on how things go and spread of new variants.

While this will eliminate the considerable hassle of getting tested, it will mean more people knowingly flying home with Covid. That raises the risk of getting infected at the airport and on the plane. Right now I’m 50/50 about whether I should cancel. Just one more thing to factor in.

I would not book any trips that extend beyond that 90days-this may just be an appeasement of the airlines for the summer. The consequences can be much worse than just the inconvenience and expense of testing positive. Because I got stuck in London, I was unable to get home in time to see a friend who died from complications of a car accident the day before I flew home. And because I live in another state, I will not get back for the funeral either.

This is sweet news.
I will continue to be cautious and do what is right, especially on the Rabbies tours I have booked.

Hopefully people will still wear masks on the plane as I believe most people will get on the plane even if they knowingly have Covid. And the cycle will continue.

We've already had increases here in infection rates.

Woo hoo! I'm flying home on Tuesday, so this is great news that I don't need to waste time and money on this. Given what seems like a super high false negativity rate on the RATs that people take to satisfy this requirement, plus that it's not required for domestic travel and in many other countries, I wasn't considering the requirement to be very helpful to actually protect anyone at airports anyway, and have a stock of extra high quality masks to protect myself.

Maybe it's best that the charade of the tests is ending. I know when I flew home from the Dominican Republic a few months ago on a half-full plane to Miami for just over 2 hours, where everyone had to have a COVID test, but then got on a packed plane for 6 hours from MIA to SFO where no one had to have one, the testing requirement gave me no sense of security and felt pretty hypocritical, too.

Though testing negative doesn't guarantee that you are, in fact, negative. My husband and I flew home from Portugal last week and, 3 days later, I tested positive. 2 days later, my husband tested positive. There is NO doubt in my mind that our exposure was on the plane as there are no mask mandates, at least not on United. And most of the people were not wearing masks. One flight attendant was, the other was not. Although we did wear our masks most of the trip, we also sat for 2 1/2 hours due to weather delays at Newark.

I'm relieved not to have to deal with the test anymore and hope it is not brought back.

I am grateful for this change. I will still remain cautious and aware of my surroundings, but my concern about being stuck unexpectedly for 10 days in a hotel room is significantly reduced.

paulesue - you were stuck in Newark for 2 1/2 hours due to weather? Was this upon your return from Portugal? We'll soon be flying in and out of Newark.

SEAsiaTraveler,
Yes, we were stuck in Newark for 2 1/2 hours because of because backups caused by severe weather. There had been strong storms both the day before (causing a delay in our flight home arriving from the US) and then strong storms the day we arrived, causing huge backups in planes arriving and departing. There was a 17 plane backup when we landed so we sat on the runway as each plane finally got to its gate. AND the plane at the gate we were assigned to wasn’t able to depart until there was clearance! Apparently Newark had been closed for a while the day we left and had just reopened!

But truly, that was an unusual event. I had checked the arrival of our flight for the prior week, and it was generally on time, with the longest delay of 30 minutes. We had taken off about 2+ hours after scheduled departure (we were told to come to the airport later) but it was the arrival that was really affected by the day’s storms.

Thanks for the explanation, paulesue. It does seem unusual. We've only experienced delays departing (e.g. ice on the wings in winter one time, heavy rain another time). Oh yes, we did circle in London years ago for an hour or so cuz the gate was occupied.
