Uber in Portugal

Hi Travelers,
I'll be in Lisbon 09/17-09/24.

Want to visit Obidos, Tomar, Sintra, and Cabo Espichel. Have looked into car rentals, trains/bus service, and Uber. Has anyone had recent experiences using Uber? How easy is it to get an Uber, how long did you have to wait for your pick-up, did you reserve the night before? Looking on Rome2Rio, taxis seem pretty cheap, but I have no idea how current the estimated price are.

Wondering if Uber beats a taxi.

Thanks!

Uber is easy, cheap and efficient. They pick you up within minutes; for local trips no need to reserve the day before. However, full disclosure, we used Uber only in Lisbon and Porto. It would be pretty easy to get to Sintra with Uber. The Uber website does not list Tomar, Obidos and Cabo Espichel as cities served. To get to Obidos or Cabo Espichel from Lisbon on Uber, it would take at least an hour--to Tomar, closer to 2, and you'd have to do some local research to find out if they'd even make the trip. In town, taxis are not expensive compared to Washington or NYC, and are also reliable.

I can only speak to using Uber within Lisbon, but we found it quick, easy, and reasonably priced.

I used Uber in Lisbon and was picked up for an early morning (6 am) airport ride in about 10 minutes.

Bolt is used almost as much as Uber in Portugal. They are usually a bit cheaper and use the same drivers. However, you can’t book Bolt ahead of time.

I would not count on Uber or Bolt in the smaller areas such as Tomar.

You won’t be here during the biggest tourist season, so should wait 3-5 minutes for a pickup.

Uber is almost always cheaper than a taxi and you don’t have to worry about being caught in traffic and running up a large tab.
