Two weeks for Portugal

Hello, Travelers. Finally going to Portugal in September. We have two weeks. Flights are booked. Hotels booked, but can be changed.
For now, plan is:
9.29 - departure from NJ to Lisbon
9.30 / 10.04 - Lisbon ( last day rent a car )
10.04/ 10.05 - Coimbra ( Fatima on the way to Coimbra )
10.05/ 10.09 - Porto ( maybe from Coimbra to Porto scenic drive via N222 )
10.09/ 10.10 - Cascais ( on the way there Nazare, maybe Obidos too )
10.10/ 10.14 - Lagos ( my wants a beach and cliffs/rocks )
10.14/ 10.15 - Lisbon Airport ( return car on 14th )

Something like that. Who doesn't like it and why? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

We did a similar trip last year and this looks doable. There are Roman ruins near Coimbra that are worth seeing. The Duoro valley, out of Porto was one of the highlights of our trip. Lisbon was hot, even at the end of Sept., so be prepared. It is also very hilly.

I very strongly suggest a couple of nights in Sintra, a very magical small town destination outside of Lisbon. I have been to Cascais a couple of times too, and though it's pretty nice I prefer Sintra. Hotels in Cascais are overpriced and still grungy, since it's a seaside town. We saw rowdy groups from elsewhere in Europe, kind of like you would see in Prague. Maybe it was a soccer weekend but it tempered the appeal. Visit Cascais, but don't stay there is my advice. Portugal is a country where it makes sense to pick hotels carefully, and even to pay a little more. The standard is lower than in most other countries in Europe. We paid $140 a night in September 2008 in Cascais for a place with gross stains on the carpet. We tried to ask for another room but they told us nope, they are pretty much all that way. We also had a clunker in Tomar, found in the Lonely Planet Guide. You can get your beach at Nazare, don't have to go all the way to Lagos. I have read that the charm of Nazare has eroded with more visitors, but in 2008 it was spectacular. Algarve can be very tourist trap-like from what I have read. Obidos is a must as a day trip. Tomar is a great stop too (for the castle/monastery), as is Evora, though a little out of your way on the north/south corridor. Also, better to end in the big city of Lisbon rather than starting there.

I have to stick up for Cascais a bit, since I live here! The downtown part of Cascais is much preferable to Sintra IMO. While September is still tourist season, things have usually calmed down a bit. And, there are beautiful hotels here. I might be able to give you some feedback about the one you have chosen.

I kind of agree about the Algarve being a long drive for a beach. Cascais has cliffs and rocks - just not the rock formations. And there are beaches many places closer than the Algarve. You could potentially drop the Algarve and spend a couple more days in Cascais or Lisbon then add Evora to your trip. It's much closer to Lisbon and is pretty amazing.

Lastly, the Lisbon airport is very close to town so there is no need to stay at the airport the night before your flight. I've made 6:30 am flights a few times - even from Cascais.
