Travel to and around Silver Coast

Hello,
We’ve decided not to rent a car (two older women) and are planning to use train/ bus from Coimbra to the Silver Coast ..accommodations for now in Nazare but subject to change based on other suggestions. It seems from other discussions this might be difficult to manage easily. I find the schedules baffling. I’ve heard hiring a car is an option ? Any help or direction is appreciated. Also, is two days in Nazare too much? Other towns?

Thanks so much!

It would be difficult without a car, IMO. The trains are very slow and buses don’t run that often. Renting a car in Coimbra is easy, as is the driving in that area. I did that on my first trip and it worked nicely. There are a number of small towns and monuments that are worth your time that you likely couldn’t see without a car.

I think two days in Nazare are too much but if you drive to other places, you could fill the time easily.

Thank you, KathrynJ,
Where would you recommend dropping the car? We will be heading to Lisbon next. I notice you are in Cascais… would that be a good target for dropping the car or another location?

Thanks again for replying and your information!

I actually did exactly that on my scouting trip nine plus years ago. However, the traffic in Cascais is challenging so not certain I’d do it again! If it’s convenient, you might want to simply take it back to Coimbra. From there the train is very easy on into Lisbon. There are likely other suburbs on the train line, but I have no experience with them.

I'm spending time in the Silver Coast area next spring and plan to use a combination of train, bus and Bolt/Uber. I'm basing myself first in Leiria then in Caldas da Rainha. I plan to visit many other towns/villages from there, including Nazare.
