travel Porto - Madrid & back to States

Good evening,
I am ending a tour in Porto and staying for a few days with grandaughter who is student in Madrid. I thought I would fly with her back to Madrid and catch a flight from Madrid to home.
2 questions -
1) There is an 8:20AM flight from Porto. How early would I have to arrive at the Porto airport for the Madrid flight?
2) There is a connecting flight from Madrid to Chicago, with only a 55 minutes between flights. Is it common to wait for passengers from connecting flights?

Arrival time depends on whether you go through passport control in Porto or Madrid. I’m guessing it will be Madrid. Which makes 55 minutes between a bit laughable. I have no idea why the airlines even offer these times! A two hour window is needed pretty much everywhere. And, if you add passport control to that, it could take longer.

With passport control in Porto, arrive 2 plus hours early. Without it, 90 minutes should be fine.
