Travel from Porto or Pinhao north to Viana do Castelo

Hello! I am new to posting on this forum, but have already obtained such great info from previous posts!
I am planning a trip to Portugal for this upcoming late August/early September. My husband and I will be flying into Porto, spending a few days in the city before traveling north to visit family. I would like to spend an overnight in the Douro Valley and am currently leaning towards Pinhao, especially after hearing good things about Quinta de la Rosa. I am wondering whether the train line that serves Regua and Pinhao also connects to Viano do Castelo. Or, would we need to rent a car? If so, I think we would need to travel back to Porto to do so which is not preferable. Thank you in advance for tips/information!

You can check out train connections at cp.pt. However, it may be a very long trip and better to rent a car. You might be able to rent a car in Régua as it’s bigger than Pinhao. I use Auto Europe and have always been pleased. .

I’m one of the fans of Quinta de la Rosa on this forum. Be sure to book very early for that time of year. It’s crush time and the time when everyone wants to visit a Quinta!

You can rent cars in Regua and Braga

EDITED TO ADD: There are public transportation options to Viano do Castelo. The ones I found weren't terribly convenient, travel time was about double that of a car. I decided to rent a car.
