We need to get an early morning ride (5 am) to Porto airport and will be staying in an apartment along the river. Does anyone know if cars/taxis run in that area?

It’s now possible to pre book an Uber - at least in the Lisbon region. That might put your mind at ease. But, since there are early flights, there will be taxi, Uber and Bolt available. You might ask the apartment owner for advise in that area.
