Having a nice time in Portugal. However, the train strikes caught up with us. On April 28, I have us leaving Porto at 9:25, changing trains in Lisbon to Evora. I’m looking at options including a slow train, Rede and Flix or some combination. I’m not excited about sitting on a bus that long with my bum knees, but it is what it is. We are staying at Na Travessa by Sao Bento. We were hoping to have some time in Evora on our arrival date since we are only there 2 nights. Looking for advice on best option. I considered doing Flix to Lisbon and train to Evora but not sure I trust the train scheduling. I also need to get from Braga to Porto, but the gal at Na Travessa said it’s best to just book a bus instead of count on the train. Thanks for any suggestions.
Yes, the train strikes are causing big headaches for many, many people! Are you checking the cp.pt website? It has good info on which trains are actually running. Some of the long distance trains have 2-3 trains a day but getting a seat might be tricky. The regional and commuter trains are a mess but a bit better in the morning and on weekends.
I would, personally, use the bus. In addition to the companies you mention, Gypsy bus, has some long distance routes. I took the bus to and from Cascais to Porto last summer and it was quite nice. It stops in Lisbon.
Thank you, Kathryn. Yes, I’m on the CP site. The strike page does have our train cancelled. I won’t deny being a little bitter. Booked 1st class tickets 2 months ago. It even sounds like some trains get canceled last minute, and as far as I can see, they still include the strike cancelled trains on the train finder. I’m guessing that’s a software issue.
I’m also wondering if trains that are scheduled to be canceled are ever reinstated.
I really feel for folks who planned a whole trip around train travel. We at least, have a car for the middle of our trip.
