Hello. We are now in Lisbon. Has anyone taken tram 28 to see some historical sights? Wondering if it is worth our time.
Thank you!
I did not take the tram when I was there in March. Lisbon is such a great city for walking. But it you’re near a stop and it’s not crowded, it might be fun.
Enjoy the rest of your trip!
I took it in April and it was so crowded that it was not a good experience. I had a more enjoyable time just walking around Lisbon.
Took the Tram when I was there last October in the early afternoon. It was pouring rain and the Tram was packed. Stayed on for a few stops and got off. I wish I went early in the morning or later in the evening when it would have been less crowded. It is difficult to see anything when it is standing room only and everyone is packed into the Tram.
Well, we took tram 28 and as folks say, it is difficult to see anything, it was crowded even in the evening. Maybe one also needs to know exactly what they are looking for. We stayed on the tram to the last stop and did our own self guided tour, saw some great street art, found a great local restaurant called Botequim, where we had a beverage with the same name and nice dinner, then was able to find a fantastic view of Lisbon before we took an uber back to our hotel. Tram 28 was indeed an experience but got us to an interesting spot at the end.
FWIW, here are my tips:
- Line-ups at the Western stops are much shorter than the Eastern stop. Most tourists start at the busy Eastern end of the line.
- When traveling West to East, sit on the right side of tram for better views.
- When you finally get to front of line and if the tram is full/standing room only, just wait for the next tram and be the first passengers to select the best window seat.
- If all you want is to ride the tram to get from point A to point B and are not concerned about a window seat/view, you can skip to the front of a long line-up and jump on the full tram. Locals do this. Drivers often call out down the line to see if anybody wants to get on the near full tram and bypass all the tourists who are waiting for seats.
- IMO, this is one of those typical tourist check list items. If you are short on time, there are many other worthwhile things to do. Remember that you have to factor in extra time to travel to (or from) the Western stop if you want to ride the full line. Good luck.
