I read that the train ride is scenic and a 2 hour ride to Pinhao. Is this a good day trip ?

Yes. Sit on right side for views on the way to Pinhao. Not much to see for first hour. Then lots of river and valley views; so much so that it gets boring. After a long day, you will probably sleep on the way back. And if it is hot weather, you will want to sit away from the window on the return trip.
