Train from Lisbon to Coimbra with "TC" service from Rossio

I'm researching trains for my October trip to Portugal, traveling from Lisbon to Coimbra. In Lisbon, I'm staying near Rossio train station, so the connections that leave directly from there are appealing.

One option via the AP (Alfa Pendular) train includes a "Transporte Complementar" (TC / complementary) service from Rossio to Santa Apolonia. My confusion arises because the schedule indicates that the complementary service arrives at Santa Apolonia at Noon and the AP #125 train from Santa Apolonia leaves at Noon.

Here are excerpts from the schedule at cp.pt:

TC|AP|U 11h30 14h09 2h39

Transporte Complementar
Lisboa - Rossio 11:30 (departure) 0h30
Lisboa - Santa Apolonia 12:00 (arrival)

Alfa Pendular
Comboio nº 125 Lisboa - Santa Apolonia 12:00 (departure) 1h39

I don't understand if the "TC" service from Rossio is the same train as the AP #125, with zero wait time at Santa Apolonia?

There is no "train" between Santa Apolónia and Rossio: you'd take the metro, Blue Line.
Maybe this is what the Transporte Completar fare includes? In any case, it might just be easier to purchase a metro card (Viva Viagem) for your Lisbon stay when you arrive at Santa Apolónia.

I think I found the ticket term on Cp.pt that allows the "Transporte Complementar" travel to Santa Apolonia:

"Passengers who buy tickets to or from Oporto-Campanhã, Coimbra-B and Lisbon Oriente, can use the respective urban trains free of charge to get to Oporto São Bento, Coimbra Cidade, Lisbon Santa Apolónia, Areeiro, Entrecampos and Sete Rios."

It doesn't specifically list the Lisbon metro as an option, so I'll confirm at the station.

The metro is so cheap and easy, even if there is a train connection between Rossio and Santa Apolonia, I'd still hop on the metro instead. It's around 5-10 minutes between the two stations. No reason to make things more complicated to save 1,50€.

Personally, I find the metro the best way to get to the different train and bus stations in Lisbon. And there are a couple of entrances at Rossio that you can enter (one right by the train station too). Don't have to worry about missing it either or having a timing issue. Just head down the steps and catch the next one. They run around every 10 minutes.

Also the metro links to the airport. I'd recommend picking up a Viva Viagem Card when arriving in Portugal.

Coimbra :) Or I should say, started in Lisbon in 1290 and then moved to Coimbra

Thank you all. I plan to buy a Viva Viagem card and it does sound as though the metro - about a 2 minute walk from my hotel - will be the best plan.

56 Down is on my list! And I'll buy my ticket online within the next couple of weeks.

Hi
As a reference, think of Amtrak and Muni in San Francisco.
It's the same between CP and city buses or subways, they are separate companies and require separate tickets.
CP tickets are only valid on CP.
There are some multiple operator tickets but they are valid only inside metropolitan areas and do not apply to long distance trains.
Rossio is close to Santa Apolonia, I would take a taxi if carrying luggage or the subway if witouth luggage (keep the subway ticket until you get out ).
Happy travels

Good comparison, aulopone. In this case the "Amtrak" site (CP.pt) said that the transportation from Rossio to Santa Apolonia would be complementary, though their site indicates that is on the regional trains, rather than the "Muni" equivalent metro which would leave from Restauradores.

Since there seems to be no such regional train, it is a freebie that is unclear how to redeem, and as was said above, for €1.50 it's more puzzle than imperative.

Thanks, Gail. I have bought my train ticket (from CP.pt) from Lisbon to Coimbra, which is where I saw the reference to the "Transporte Complementar" from Rossio to Santa Apolonia.

I haven't researched yet (and will) to confirm whether the Viva Viagem card can be used in either Coimbra or Porto; assuming not, I will want to plan to minimize any residual balance.....or plan to return to Lisbon, which sounds much more fun!

I stopped in at the train station to ask what the "TC" refers to. Basically it means you're on your own to complete that leg of your trip, in my case to get to Santa Apolónia station.

I'm steps from Restauradores metro station and have funds remaining on my Viva Viagem card, so I'll be taking the metro. I did a trial run on the journey when I went to the Tile Museum the other day. Thanks all for your guidance so that I had an idea of my options!

VV card with zapping reload is very convenient and of good value too. eg. tram tickets is normally 3€, but when you use the card, it is about 1.35€, same as for metro. Only exception was when we took CP train to Belem, as there is no card machine to check out, the charge was the full length of the train rather than to Belem (2.3€ instead of 1€, big deal 😉).

When we left Lisbon, we just gave our cards (with a few € remaining) to others waiting at the ticket machine, as VV card is only valid for a year and we won’t be back that soon.
