Train and Bus general Info

Train app is CP.pt and Bus app is ALSA.

ALSA Is good in that you buy the tickets and download them immediately to your Apple wallet. CP.PT - you get the tickets by email and have to download them to your files and fish around for them later.

Porto and Lisbon have multiple train and bus stations.

In going from Porto to Lisbon, I chose the departure as the main station in Companha, although Sao Bento was closer to our hotel. But good news. We can board any train in Sao Bento for free and go to Companha to catch our train there - according to employee working the ticket window.

Going from Vigo Spain to Porto, you can also sing up with the Portuguese companies to get to Porto. However, only two trains a day - morning and night with nothing mid-day. So we had to go to the bus station. It turns out Urzaiz is the station for Alsa. No reserved seats, so get there early and get in line. It also turned out that at least one of the bus trips won to Casa de Musica in Porto which was closer to our hotel. Just as we found one of the alternative train stations (Santa Appolonia) had a direct metro line to our hotel area there. So it helps to know how far your hotel is from a metro line and station, and choose appropriate stations.

For a day trip - say Porto to Guimares - you take the CP.PT train from Sao Bento or Companha. However, it's a local train with a dozen stops, so you can't buy the tickets via the app and have to stand in line.

Taxis are really cheap, we paid 6-8 eu for a group to go a few miles. That area near Casa de Music has a nice mall, is away from many of the tourists, and there is wonderful upscale food mall Bom ... something. Much like Lisbon's Time Out Market. That whole area near Sao Bento to the Bridget and river is just insane and I would never stay around there. So the taxis, ride shares, and metro's make for more affordable and nicer stays.

RailRider, Was the food mall perhaps Mercado do Bolhao? I had lunch there the last time I was in Porto and liked browsing the many stalls. Thanks for the info on Alsa. I prefer being near the front of the bus, so will have to remember to arrive early. I have the Flixbus app, but hadn't downloaded Alsa. I was able to reserve the seat I wanted with Flixbus. I've only used Bolt in Portugal rather than taxis. The app is so easy to use and understand.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether or not Vigo is worth visiting as a day trip (I think you mentioned it briefly in another post in the Spain forum). I'll be in Braga for a few days and it looks like the trip is about 1.5 hours by bus.

Additional info regarding bus companies in Portugal.

The national bus company is Rede Expressos.
https://rede-expressos.pt/en

The competing national bus companies are :
Flixbux
https://shop.flixbus.co.uk/

Gypsy bus
https://gipsyy.com/

These companies sometimes partner with other companies on some routes including the Spanish Alsa bus company.

The national bus carriers are in addition to local and regional bus companies.

Portugal trains, with the exception of the train from Lisbon to Setúbal the trains are run by Comboios de Portugal.

Thanks Autophibe. I am not an expert but just wanted to share what I learned.

One of the food courts was Mercado Bom Successo. Had some seafood dishes for 10-12 Euros.

I like Vigo - it looks like Porto but without the hyper tourism. Porto is on everyone’s radar and overrun. Vigo is similarly hilly and similar architecture but was quieter and nice. It has a nice harbor area. I think it’s a bit long for a day trip.

Guimaraes is a good day trip though. For 6 eu you can tour the castle and duke’s palace. But there are a number of free sites. And city center is pretty but not too touristy. It seems to be very popular with French tourists.

We are Californians (a senior couple) visiting family in London.
A few weeks ago we decided to add an excursion to Portugal in the middle of our London stay.

We are flying from London to Lisbon this Thursday, Sept. 26 and back to London (from Porto) on Thursday, October 3. We have hotels for 4 nights in Lisbon and 3 nights in Porto, but not many other plans.

We want to travel from Lisbon to Porto on Monday Sept. 30 and my Kindle Rick Steves Portugal says that there is a train every hour.
Can you purchase tickets in advance or is this just a walk-on?

How would you best recommend best getting from Lisbon to Porto next week?

Yes, you can purchase train tickets online a maximum of 60 days before departure.
You can also purchase tickets in person at the train station.
The AP train is the fastest, the first class seats are larger more comfortable.

Thank you, Autopone.
I'll look for the AP train.
I think I'll try trainline.com, which I've used in the past. If they don't have it, I'll try every link in your earlier post.
Thanks, again.
