Travelling from Seville to Lisbon

Hi, my husband and I (mid sixties, active, foodie, nature, culture and history loving folks) have 6 days to travel from Seville to Lisbon, we fly home on day 7. We will be travelling mid March 2023. Our thought is to sit back and enjoy the scenery on a bus from Seville to Faro and from there rent a car and meander our way up to Lisbon. Although we love the coastline we are not surfers, beach sitters or large resort types. We prefer walking and moderate hiking, charming towns, food and drink. We have been to Lisbon before so don’t need more than a day or 2 there. Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Faro is a pretty awful place. By awful, I mean big, overdeveloped, and not at all charming. Plus, it's in the middle of the most heavily touristed part of the country.

Your description of yourselves could be used to exactly describe us as well. We just returned from 5 weeks driving around Portugal, doing precisely what you like to do, hiking, exploring, eating.

My suggestion would be to get yourselves from Seville to Vila Real do Santo Antonio, directly across the Guadiana River from Spain, right at the very very very easternmost end of the Algarve. It's a wonderful town, and was the biggest surprise of our trip. Granted, when we arrived they were in the middle of their "City Day" week-long festival, but all the same it's a great place to wander for the day. And if you love walnuts, well, it's Nirvana. Plus, there's a lovely Pousada right in the town centre. A few minutes south is what I think is the best part of the Algarve...endless miles of gorgeous, nearly deserted beach to walk on.

I'm sure you can rent a car there to drive to Lisbon along the smaller roads.
