We will be driving from Porto to Coruña and back. It looks like the fastest routes have tolls. What is the best way to pay the tolls? Should we do it through the car rental company or is it better to just pay as we go? Thanks!
If I remember correctly that section of highway used the old paper ticket. You pick it up when you get on and pay when you exit the road. That was in 2023.
It may be all electronic now, but I don’t know.
We did this in July. If you rent in Porto, they will include a transponder for tolls in Portugal and add them to your bill. In Spain there were toll booths and we just tapped our credit card. Make sure you get into the correct lane, as they also have lanes just for those with Spanish transponders (Your Portuguese one won't work). IIRC, we paid about $20 USD for tolls from A Coruña to the Spain/Portugal border and another $15-$20 from there back to Porto. These were on the main highways all the way.
Also, don't forget to tell your rental car company that you are driving your rental from Portugal to Spain. They will add a cross border fee, but that way your rental contract is valid in Spain if something happens. Have a good trip!
Thank you so much for all of the helpful advice and information!
