Tipping a guide

We have arranged a tour to Sintra with one of the guides mentioned in the Portugal guidebook before our RS tour begins. We haven't done this before--what is an appropriate tip? There will be four of us and the guide. Thanks!

This is a very personal choice on your part. My theory is that a private guide charges you what they expect to earn. They have set the price and I consider that fair. If I feel that the service and experience have been exceptional, I will cheerfully add a tip, but I don’t feel under any obligation to do so or that there is a set amount that must be tipped.

In this case, the guide appears to be a small company run by a husband and wife, with perhaps one or two others guiding. The guide we'd have is the husband, so I think what you said makes sense--it's not like a large company booked by something like Viatour. I appreciate the insight!

I likely would tip if I was pleased with the tour. But, bear in mind, tipping in Portugal is not like the US. Tips are much smaller as a rule.
