Thank You gift ideas for super hotel staff

My daughter and I are going to Lisbon, Portugal in July, and I wanted to bring a couple of thank you gifts for 2 staff members of the hotel where we are staying. It has been a challenge to book this trip due to airline fiascos, and the hotel has been amazing about helping me. It has taken MANY back and forth emails, changed reservations, and other considerations to make it all happen. What would be appropriate to bring from the States, to Portugal? I have racked my brain to come up with a thoughtful gift, and I am drawing a blank. Please help!

Money is the answer. Any hotel employee will appreciate some euros over anything else.

Jennifur, the best thing you can do for the hotel is to provide glowing reviews that help their business. Also, find out who the persons who helped you report to and send a personal note: name names; be specific about what was done for you. That will benefit those individuals come review/raise time. :O)

Money is always good. I agree with that too. A fun thing to add would be to write a note on a postcard with a scene from your hometown or area. They might enjoy seeing where you are from and it makes it personal. I'm from Seattle so I tend to also bring items from the area to hand out as gifts or thank yous. Starbucks items, Seahawks, smoked salmon, local tea for Pike Place market or local chocolates so for us Theos, Frans or Frangos.

Thanks, Jenn! Go Seahawks! :) More great ideas, I could combine the postcard/thank you with either money, or local (Dallas) products. Love the chocolate idea.

Jenny, Jenny Jenny ..... do you think a Portuguese hotel employee is likely to be appreciative of a Dallas oriented gift? Would a Dallas employee be happy with a Lisbon oriented gift? I know we all think that people in other countries are very interested and envious of us North Americans, but even if that is sometimes the case, a kind word and some money will be appreciated more than a baseball cap. Of course, my opinion only, it goes without saying.

Thanks for your input, Norma. It is appreciated. No, actually I don't think that everyone is envious of us North Americans, but interested? Yes. As I am interested in Portugal, which is why I am going. I think any of these ideas would at least show that I am grateful for the extra time spent on me. I do think money is always appreciated, but a more unique approach is refreshing as well. I'm not sure which way I will go, but all of the ideas are good ones. Thanks again.

I get lots of gifts from clients at Christmas, I very much appreciate the kindness from all of them, but honestly, money is the gift I appreciate the most. Not chocolates, restaurant gift cards, massage gift cards, hand made pillows, soap, etc...
Money is what I really appreciate most.

Hi jennyfurri.

Money might be ofensive, if you give it not as a tip (that is usual) but as a reward. Writting to the hotel saying you are thankfull for waht those employees did, might be misunderstood - sometimes people do more than they are expected (or ordered) to, so this (although that might be the best idea here) you should do after your return, and after asking those employees if that's ok to do so. People in Portugal are very interested of USA, we live with you everyday (movies, series, etc.). We know a lot about your History (I know, it is recent so that is easy) and everybody in Portugal knows who your President is, and even the name of the miss Mr. Clinton "did not have" sex with. We are also aware of Mr. Trumps funny speaches, and today the most read blog in Portugal has (funny) pictures of his home (with wife and son). So, anything from your home would be appreciated. For myself I would love a hat (like JR used in "Dallas"). But they are probably much younger than me, so anything related to Kennedy, space shutle, cowboy boots, hats, "that thing I don't know the name that is like a tie but are two strings - or something like that, sorry for my poor english", a picture, something recalling to american football or basketball... well, that's all I can think about for now, I thing would be appreciated. This is vague, I know, but something (like for instance a key chain) recalling to one of these things.

Wish you a nice stay in Portugal

Thank you, Helena. That makes a lot of sense. I know I am probably over thinking this, but I really didn't want to offend someone, when all I really wanted to do was thank them for an exceptional job. Your comments are much appreciated! I am looking forward to my Portugal visit - it looks beautiful!

You are from Dallas - how about something uniquely Texas? Chili seasoning or barbeque rub. Dallas Cowboys gear. Mesquite rub
