Can the zapping option be used on the Viva Viagem card to travel by train from Lisbon to Sintra or does one have to load a ticket on the card? If one has to buy a ticket, can the outbound ticket be bought prior to the day of travel and can one load a return ticket on at the same time? Thanks.

I used the Viva Viagem (zapping) for the train trip to Sintra. Also good for the train to Cascais.

The zapping card - Via Viagem is good on all trains and metros, even the ferries in the Lisbon region. It’s loaded with an amount of money of your choosing then the amount of the ride is deducted each time it’s used. FYI - you can check your balance at any of the ticket machines in the train stations and metro. Just lay the card on the reader and your balance is displayed.
