Suggestions for day trip to Douro Valley from Porto

Hi,

We're looking for suggestions on how best to do a day trip from Porto to Douro Valley. Renting a car is not an option. We do enjoy the river but prefer not to spend the entire day on a boat. We're also interested in sampling wine as part of the trip. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

We did a day trip to the Douro from Porto with CoolTour Oporto. It was a van tour with 8 people. We visited two wineries, tasted Port, had lunch and an hour cruise on the river. The guide was very informative and fun. It was a lovely day and the price was very reasonable.

Am planning a trip in October 2017.
Our Douro River Train Trip is planned as:
1. Leave Porto early (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/São_Bento_railway_station) and take train ( http://www.cp.pt/passageiros/pt ) to Tua to check out new dam ( https://www.peri.com/en/projects/water-retaining-structures/foz-tua-dam.html ).
2. Take return train to Peso da Régua and visit http://www.museudodouro.pt
3. Take taxi to Lamego to Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios ( https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santuário_de_Nossa_Senhora_dos_Remédios ) and walk down the stairs.
4. Return to Régua and eat late lunch/dinner ( https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g1028273-Peso_Da_Regua_Vila_Real_District_Northern_Portugal.html )..
5. Take return to train to Porto.
