Suggested travel itinerary to Sao Miguel, Azores in Mid-September

Dear Travel Forum Experts,

My husband and I will be traveling to Sao Miguel in mid-September. We are both seniors and are looking for a very relaxing trip. We enjoy short hikes, scenery, history and coastal views. We are very flexible in our time away, and are looking for a trip that would span 8-10 days in the Azores. We are thinking of moving around the island quite a bit to be able to really enjoy the specific area at a slow pace. So far, we are thinking of spending some time in Ponta Delgada at Senhora da Rosa (2nt), Terra Nostra Gardens in Furnas (1 nt), and some days in and around Mosteiros (Sete Citades) and Nordeste. We're not sure if we should add (or substitute) some beach time in Ribeiro Grande or in Calhetas. I like the idea of the tidal pools. Are we doing too much? We would love some suggestions! We thought of flying to Flores for a few days, but we are concerned that flights might be cancelled due to weather, etc.

Thank you!

Your best advice will come from Carl, who posts on this Forum and has created an excellent Azores guide. Use the search feature to find him. I can weigh in as a couple of senior first timer visitors who bought a package trip and visited Sao Miguel last fall. We had a lovely, relaxing 7 day visit. I am assuming you will have a car, as we did. A few comments/suggestions:
- Furnas was a fun drive from the Ponta Delgada area, where we stayed. We enjoyed time in the hot pools at Poca da Dona Beija. Didn't eat cozido but had some good beef for lunch
- just driving around the island is lovely. I highly recommend you get an automatic, not a manual transmission car. The terrain is hilly, towns have narrow streets and many blind corners.
- take a little time to familiarize yourself on line with their traffic signs. Most intersections are traffic circles, and their speed and merge signs are different from US
- we took a local tour to a pineapple plantation, which was fun and educational
- plan to enjoy the fish - it's incredibly fresh and there is a huge variety
- we enjoyed touring the Azores military museum in downtown Ponta Delgada, on the waterfront. It only takes cash, so bring some Euros
Have a wonderful time!

Thank you! Especially for the info on driving and familiarizing ourselves with the signage! Luckily, my husband is Portuguese and is used to driving on some of these very narrow and curvy roads! Sounds like you had a great time!

If I may suggest, read the post (written by the webmaster) at the top of this Portugal forum, titled "Azores Islands Travel Advice-2024". There is a link in it to my Azores guide, and the first 52 pages are FREE to read. This will help with your logistical planning. There is NO obligation to purchase my 533 page guidebook.

I encourage you to allot the 10 days. You will not regret this decision. You could visit one more island, but then you might end up with flight delays or cancellations. Sao Miguel has everything you are looking for, per your written wants. Flores is quite a distance away. Save it, and the nearby island of Corvo, for a future visit. IF you really want to visit another island on this trip, take a 15 minute flight to Santa Maria. That tiny island could keep you enthralled for up to a week if you covet slow travel!

I have not stayed at Senhora da Rosa, but did drive by it in late November (2025) to research Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes, next door, and some other ermidas, just minutes away by car. There is nothing to see or visit within walking distance of this hotel, so be aware. I always suggest to first time visitors to stay in the downtown area of Ponta Delgada. There are countless hotels of great quality there. Dozens of restaurants, and plenty of interesting sites to see, are located within this compact area. All are reachable by walking. The highway is also right there, to springboard you to wherever you want to explore, quickly and efficiently.

With 10 days, I would split the lodgings between Ponta Delgada, the Furnas/Povoacao area, and maybe Ribeira Grande. You could also stay in the Lagoa/Vila Franca do Campo area. Driving distances can be long, but almost always include stunning views.

If you are a beach lover, then September should be gorgeous. I never think the ocean water is warm enough, but many locals and visitors do. The tidal pools and beaches are located all over the island. Lifeguards should be working until mid-September, and almost all of these locations have bathroom and changing facilities.

I could keep you totally busy in Sao Miguel every day, from sunrise to sunset...and past midnight :-) . This goes for all nine Azores islands. Being too busy depends on your travel style, but you must indulge in a thermal pool to melt away any stress or tension. I cherish walking and hiking in the Azores, and a car will expand your reach.

I am always a private message away for specific Azores questions. Or, just post your questions and thoughts here, so others might get answers and ideas for their visits.

Enjoy the planning!

Thank you Carl! I did read your free guide and found it very useful, especially the recommended hotels on pages 50-51. I will certainly take your advice and stay in one of the downtown hotels you recommend in Ponta Delgada. I will message you privately because I am still wondering if staying at the farthest most east and west areas of the island, and possibly north, would give us the added time in the day to explore hiking paths and other gems outside the main tourist hours. Thanks again!
