Staying near, but not in Lisbon?

I'm just starting my research on Portugal now, but for an 8-10 day trip we're thinking about being in or near Lisbon to see Lisbon, Sintra, Obidos, and Tomar, then moving to the Algarve coast, and then a stay in Evora before returning to Lisbon to fly home. That leaves out the northern wine country but my wife is not a fan of port wine anyway.

When we travel, my wife and I prefer to avoid the larger cities when it works. It seems that many visitors to Portugal stay in Lisbon and take day trips from there to Sintra, Obidos, Tomar, even as far as Evora. Assuming the use of a car, would the reverse work? Could one easily stay in Obidos, for example, and day trip to Tomar, Sintra, and Lisbon? Would that even make sense? As an example, when we visited Nice, France we actually stayed in a town called Villefranche-sur-mer out of the bustle of Nice and just took a day trip to Nice, itself.

Do not stay in Obidos. We made the mistake of staying in that over touristed town. It is good for two hours at most.
We live staying in cities but if you don ‘t want to stay in Lisbon, stay in nearby Caiscais. It is on the water.

I agree with Suki. Obidos is tiny and overrun with tourists. Stay somewhere an easy train trip into Lisbon. You won’t want to have a car there.

With 8-10 days, you won’t have much time for day trips, especially if you want to go to the Algarve. I agree to not stay in Obidos. Cascais might fit for you. Lisbon and Sintra are easy without a car. You would need a car for Obidos or Tomar. Cascais does get crowded in summer, but is lovely other times of the year.

Great feedback. Exactly what I was looking for. I know absolutely nothing about this area. I’ll be digging into the Rick Steves guidebook soon.
