Hi Everyone,
We are a couple in our in our late 60s looking to escape the Canadian winter by spending 3 weeks or so in the Algarve. We have kind of zeroed in on Tavira as a nice place to stay (although have not booked anything yet). The town looks charming and I am wondering if anyone has stayed there and used it as a base for day trips. We plan on renting a car while there. Any advice is welcomed.

Tavira is charming, however more Canadians seem to be based in nearby Cabanas, which is a more modern resort, but has a nice boardwalk and plenty of cafes and restaurants. Many of the Canadians I have met there seem to stay for 8+ weeks.
If you are travelling before the end of March but not over Christmas, you will find that some landlords offer 4 weeks accommodation for the price 3.
January through to mid February can be rainy but we have never had day after day of rain.
There are plenty day trip options - Spain, Monchique in the hills, Alcoutim on the Spanish border is a pleasant lunch spot, Faro by train, Cacela Velha fort, Castro Marim Castle, the Roman ruins at Estoi and other coastal towns and villages.
