My husband and I are traveling from Lisbon to Porto in May on Rick Steves tour. We will have 3 extra days after the tour ends before we fly to the Azores for a walking tour. We are planning on flying to the Azores from Lisbon. Any suggestions on how to spend a couple extra days before we head to Azores where we complete our trip? We will be visiting a few small towns between Lisbon and Porto.
We were in Porto for extra days after a Rick Steves Portugal tour in 2022. We had a great time exploring there, the tour is only there for a day or so. We visited a port lodge (we went to Taylor's, but there are lots to choose from), walked to the fishing village of Afurada, did a tuk-tuk tour, walked around the Gaia (across the river), took a bus to Matosinhos...in other words, lots to do that isn't covered on the tour, if you want to spend some of your extra time there before going back to Lisbon...
Thank you. Great ideas.
I agree lots to do in Porto. Walking tours, Palacio Bolsa, touring Sardine Cannery and visiting Cork Planet, a museum about cork.
I lived there for a year and managed to miss Cork Planet. In other words, you’ll have plenty to do. I’d stay in Porto for sure. The Bolsa is beautiful as are the many churches. You won’t regret it.
Our favourite day in Porto was across the river in Gaia. We managed to fill a day wandering through the back streets, doing a port tour and tasting, and we also discovered that cork museum mentioned by someone else.
Take a ride out to the beach at Matosinhos and watch the sunset. If you get there early enough you can watch the surfers by the old fort.
Of course. Porto is for Port wine. You would be remiss to not visit the famous Port warehouses and do a tasting.
Book a food tour if it's not included in your current itinerary. We did a tour in Porto and it was great. Lots of great food to taste, port too, with pairings. It's also like a mini city tour as well...
