Planning a trip to Southern Spain and Algarve (in July). We've targeted Marbella and Lagos as a couple of towns where we'd like to stay. I'm wondering if there's any other towns that would be good to visit (stay in). Looking for places with a nice beach area, some semblance of night life (not so much clubs, but more bars and a good selection of restaurants). I've started looking at Fuengirola (Spain) and maybe Luz (Portugal). Any recs for some semi-low key beach towns would be appreciated.

Lagos is much larger than Luz, with lots of restaurants and more than a couple of nice beaches. But, Luz is very cute. They do have a few restaurants but not nearly the number of Lagos. Tavira (quite close to Spain) might be another option.

Do you like the beach that much!? We have better beaches in Florida than in Southern Spain. I have stayed at Fuengirola and was not impressed with the beaches. That city is a more affordable place than Marbella.
Portugal is wonderful, especially Lisbon, Porto and that portion of the country.
