We will be driving form Carvoeiro to Lisbon as the last leg of a 3-week roadtrip through Portugal in early May. We plan to take hwy A-2 ...but is there a reason we should take smaller roads closer to the coast instead? or part of it? Is there something that should not be missed along that southwestern coast? Thanks in advance.
If you have the time consider the back roads. The scenery will probably be nicer and you’ll get to pass through some small towns. It will be a slower drive since the speed limit will be lower and you need to slow way down entering any town. You would avoid the A-2 tolls. Another alternative to the A-2 that is toll free is the IC-1 that runs parallel to the A-2. Again, a slower drive, but if you have the time, an extra hour is minimal.
Ok, thanks!
