are considering a spontaneous trip to Portugal in July. Dates are firm, unfortunately. We can take the daytime heat as we live in warm states, but good AC at night is a must. IFKYK.
Recommendations for hotels in Porto and Lisbon with real AC? Or a polite way to inquire about the effectiveness of the AC at hotels who have AC?
I have traveled to Europe many times--my kid lives there--and accept the European AC as part of the experience. On this trip, however, cool AC at night is mandatory.
Thanks for your help!
I find when traveling in the summer that chain hotels usually have the best A/C.
Look for Hilton, Marriott, Eurostars, H10. These are a few chains we have stayed in.
LOL - we women of a certain age know of what you speak!!!!
I second the chain hotels and I add this:
I travel with a small travel fan. It's so helpful in making sure the cool(ish) air blows around right in front of me.
My old one broke last year and I replaced it with this $9 fan. It's been on 3 trips so far and it's excellent!!!!

.... something I learned when I was following my daughter who spent a month in Portugal in July a couple of summers ago .... the climate is acturally more reasonable than Spain, France, Italy, etc. If you search historical weather, Portugal doesn't usually get as hot as other parts of Europe. When Europe is sweltering through 35-40 degrees, Portugal is still in the 20s
Once you narrow down your your search for hotels, you can go to TripAdvisor and look at reviews for stays in those particular hotels in July and August to see if there are any complaints as to whether the air conditioning was insufficient.
