Sintra souvenirs / traditional crafts shopping

Greetings!

We'll have about 1 hour to wander around Sintra (not the palaces but the village itself) before moving onto Cabo da Roca. I was wondering if there are a lot of cute shops in the center with souvenirs and maybe local crafts, tasty treats, etc?

Thank you!

Anna, there are various bakeries around Sintra, some featuring the famous “quedinha” pastries. A famous one of these bakeries is right in the center of town, can’t remember the name just now, but it must appear in every guide book. There are some shops in town too, of course it depends on what you are looking for. I found an upstairs tile workshop and gallery, operated by a woman and her two daughters. I got two tiles there that I display at home and love. Their tiles also are mostly quite thin and light, unlike many others.

I was in Sintra around Christmas on a ship tour. There seems to be two levels of Sintra town. Lower level is around the train station and 'modern'. The tour bus dropped us off in the upper town around the palace and visitor's bureau. That is below the Castle. There are a lot of small alleys with shops. There was a lot of cork products for sale, even purses.

You will find beautiful Portugese pottery all over the country. I don’t recall seeing many shops in Sintra but I was not really looking for them there.

Casa Piriquita is the best place for pastries, especially the travesseiros (created by them), but they have all the traditional pastries of the region. I didn't see anything in the shops that I didn't find nicer ones and cheaper ones in other places. Along the road up from the center toward the train station there are a lot of artisans selling their stuff, you may see a few things there.

thank you so much everyone!

I know the ladies wanted to get some products made from cork. I wonder what that tile shop was. Something that is not too heavy sounds actually good, so I'll look into that . I also beleve there are some gold and silver smiths in Sintra. Just met a Japanese lady who visited some years ago and purchased a very delicately made gold braclet in Stinra. As for the pastries, I also wanted to get some sweets that we could take with us on the bus to Cabo da Roca, so will be sure to search for Casa Piriquita.
