Sintra: Chalet Saudade or location near National Palace?

Planning a trip to Portugal for May 2022 and am considering the Chalet Saudade and either a hotel or Airbnb very near the National Palace. We are in our 60s/70s, so like to stay relatively close to a center so we can walk to and from our meals and some of the sites.

I see a number of folks stayed at Chalet Saudade and recommend it. Is the walk toward the National Palace an easy 10 minute walk? I lean toward staying here but want to get a better idea of what the walk into town would be like.

If we stay in the area near the National Palace, does that get very busy during the day? I see next May is getting busy already so want to keep that in mind. I checked one of the other hotels and it is already half booked up for the time frame we will be there.

Any other recommendations? I want to keep the cost moderate so the Tivoli is above my budget.

Thank you for your help!

We’d wanted to stay at the Chalet Saudade when we visited Sintra (May 2019) but it was fully booked, so ended up at the Tívoli Sintra Hotel.

Mind you, there are two Tívoli Hotels in the area.
The Hotel Tívoli Sintra on Praça da República was reasonably priced, (prices may have changed due to the pandemic)
When I booked this hotel (directly via their website) they had a special deal if staying 3 nights or more. We paid around €90/night.
In contrast, the other Tivoli Hotel, The Tívoli Palacio de Seteais was €200-€300/ night!

Anyway, the walk from the Chalet ( near train station) is an easy 10-15 minute ( fairly flat) walk to the city center which does get very crowded during the day.

Here’s my trip report on Sintra, if you’re interested.

Enjoy your trip!

Thanks, Priscilla! I look forward to reading your report.

I decided to book Chalet Saudade after reading about crowds around the National Palace and central area, which confirmed my decision to book at the Saudade. First reservation made for May!
