Sintra by car or train?

We’re in Lisbon for a few days then renting a car to drive for a few days on the Silver Coast on the way to Porto. First on our list is Sintra before spending a few days in Cascais. Would it be smarter to do a day trip by train to Sintra then drive north later in the week or continue with our plan of just start driving from Lisbon? Also could add Sintra trip from our three day stay in Cascais.

If driving a car to Sintra, you would need to leave it outside of the town center. So unless you need a car right after visiting Sintra, I would take a train. Could pick the car up after your time in Cascais (there's a Europcar location by the train station) or I'm sure other car rental agencies around so no need to pick the car up in Lisbon. I'm not sure about the order of your days, Lisbon, Sintra, Cascais, then Silver Coast or....

Agree with Lynn, if you're just visiting Sintra village it's best to take the train from Lisbon and use the local taxi / bus in Sintra.
Several roads are restricted and don't allow private cars.

If you're planning to visit areas around Sintra ( Guincho, Cabo da Roca, Azenhas do Mar, etc) a car is recommended.
