I thought I recall that Portugal is/was known for its shoes. If so, are there any places in Lisbon or Porto where you recommend going shoe shopping for males?

Portugal makes great shoes. In fact, my favorite brand is from Portugal (Arcopedico--not sure if they make mens shoes) and it still manufactures locally.
I love shoe shopping when I am in Europe. I found many shoe shops in shopping districts, but make sure you only consider locally made shoes. One caveat--Europeans have narrower feet and therefore it's difficult to find wide shoes.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I gather that any shopping district might carry locally made shoes. Decades ago, I had some shoes from Portugal.
