Setubul as a day trip from Lisbon

I am thinking about a day trip to Setubal, sometime in the week of March 14 – March 18. I am in Lisbon for a week before the start of my Rick Steves tour.

It seems that there is more than enough to do there for a day .. Sado Estuary, Troia Peninsula, Livramento Market, Sao Filipe Fort, Casa do Corpo Santo, Ubering to wine tasting locations, dolphin watching, Palmela 10 km north.

Looking for opinions from others who have taken a day trip there, or stayed there. How much were you able to fit in on a day trip, and do you feel it was worth it?

I notice there are organized day tours to this area .. covering locations such as Sesimbra and wine tasting, but most did not include Setubal. Thanks for any insights.

I didn't get any responses to this post, and only one when I posted on TripAdvisor as well. Setubal sounds like a great day trip, but am wondering why very few people go there. Of course, I perhaps have more time than most.

There is now a commuter train to Setubal every 20 minutes from Lisbon, making it a very easy day trip. I’m not certain about public transport once you get there, so you might be taking uber to get around.

Lots of people really like Setubal. I wasn’t blown away. However, the Dolphin tour is very nice, or was when I went. The market is small but has nice tiles. But, so do many other buildings and markets all over Portugal.

Since the commuter train makes it easy, if you have the time, it would make for a quieter day outside of Lisbon.

I saw Setubal as a day trip from Lisbon last year and liked it so much that I'm staying a few nights on my next trip to explore a little more. The colorful houses in the historic center reminded me of Puerto Rico. As kathryn mentioned the train makes it easy to visit. The train I took on the way back stopped at the ferry dock and I took a ferry back over to Lisbon, which was enjoyable as well.

We were in Portugal in December and did a day trip to Setubal. My 21-year old son really wanted to go there to try the choco Frito (fried cuttlefish), which is apparently a specialty there. It is super easy to get there on the train from Lisbon. Honestly, there wasn't a lot to do, but that was just fine with us. It was a nice change of pace from Lisbon, which was very crowded with tourists. We enjoyed just sitting for a while in the main square in Setubal, having a nice seafood lunch at one of the shoreline restaurants, and seeing the cathedral. We also liked visiting the market hall, just to see the azulejo tiles and all the fresh fish that was on offer. We got an Uber to take us out to the beach at Praia da Figueirinha, and it was beautiful and incredibly relaxing.
