Second Guessing our schedule - thoughts?

Hi, My husband and I (in our 60s) are planning our first trip to Portugal. We enjoy outdoor activities (hikes, bike rides) in addition to typical sightseeing. Our current schedule is May 30 - June 13, 2024, arriving and departing from Lisbon. We plan to stay in Lisbon, Lagos, Evora, Porto and then back to Lisbon (possibly Cascais), still refining the exact itinerary. We'll do day trips from Lisbon and Porto to Sintra, Douro, possibly Coimbra, etc.

I'm concerned that it may be too crowded in this timeframe, especially June 12 - 13 in Lisbon with the Saint Anthony festivities. We typically like to travel outside of heavy tourist time-frames.

The other possibility would be to travel 4/22 - 5/8. I believe crowds might be better?? But what about the weather?? An added plus for this schedule is that we would be able to fly into Lisbon and out of Porto which simplifies travel logistics. I'm just concerned weather might not be nice. Also, will Douro Valley be green yet in early May?

I'd love your thoughts on the 2 time frames regarding tourist crowds, weather, challenges (or not) with the June holiday ...what would you do? I'd love to hear from anyone who has visited during similar timeframes as to your experiences.

Thank you for your input!

I have been to Portugal twice, both times in April and I thought the weather was lovely. ( I am Canadian, so my bar is set a bit lower). But both times were sunny, no major rain that I remember and I think around 20 degrees celsius ( I think that is around 70 F?)
I would certainly do those dates, particularly if it means you can fly out of Porto.

We were in Portugal this year during that April/May time period. It rained the first two days and was sunny and mostly pleasant the rest of time. Sintra was very green but crowded. Lisbon and Obidos were warm enough for shorts. One day was in the low eighties and some of the tour members were struggling not being use to it. We didn’t make it to Porto because I contracted Covid a week after we got there and we were booted from the RS Tour. We spent the rest of our time in Cascais. I don’t like heat so I wouldn’t consider that area in mid June.

We went to Portugal April 29-May 12 in 2019. The weather was great. Warm enough for short sleeves most days, a very light cardigan or fleece just a few times. I would think it perfect for hiking, biking- I'd worry about it being too warm in June. We were in the Duoro Valley around May 8 and it was green. The grapevines already had enough growth they were starting to prune. May 1 is a big holiday and many things will be closed, so just keep that in mind.

If you can go earlier, it would be preferable. And it'd be nice to limit your stay to two locations for 2 weeks. in Portugal.

We enjoy staying in apartments and getting to see neighborhoods long enough to know the place. We also prefer to cook our own food and live like the locals.

Earlier is better, as others have written. It won’t be as crowded and temps will be cooler. I love that time of year here.

Skip the Algarve in such a short trip. You can fill your time easily from Lisbon to Porto. Especially if you want to do the Douro. If you are interested in wine, you might consider a night in the Douro.

Open jaw is preferable.

Thank you all for the great insight! Looking into changing our flights but of course prices have gone up again since yesterday, should have jumped on it!

Still thinking about our itinerary, there's a good chance we won't be back because there are so many other places we want to go! I want to see as much as we can but not spend the whole time traveling! The open jaw will help!

I agree with kathrynj. Definitely skip the Algarve and spend less time traveling and checking in and out of hotels. Plan on Sintra being extremely crowded with tourists and impacted by weather. Plan ahead very carefully.

Hi... a quick note about airfares going up from one day to another. Clear all the cookies from the history of your browser before looking a second time. Somehow--and I'm not a techie person so can't describe this very well-- but the airlines know when you've looked once. If you come back a second time or third, they'll up the prices for your IP address. LOL so clear your cookies first.

Thanks! I had read that, and actually learned how to search "incognito" via Google too. I guess it works?? I'm not a techie either 🤪

On another note, we did get our flights changed to the earlier dates, dropped the Algarve and I'm finally happy with our plan!! Can't wait!
