Rural Tourism

We are planning on finally taking it a little easier after 6 active trips to Europe. I'm 75. Can someone tell me about rural stays in Portugal? I am guessing they are similar to those in Italy but perhaps a bit less expensive. Is there an area with more to choose from? We would prefer to have interesting day trips nearby with historical significance. Thanks.

There are several areas I might choose. The Alentejo, the Douro and possibly the Minho region. If you want to come in summer, I would avoid the Alentejo, as it gets hotter than the other areas for longer in summer. All of these are wine regions with small towns, etc. The Douro is the most picturesque, IMO. And, might have the easiest quintas to locate for accommodation. All of Portugal is quite historic, these areas included.

Take a look at these and feel free to ask questions, as I have stayed in all of these areas.
