Road trip (Lisbon or Sintra down the west coast to Algarve)

We will be visiting Portugal in November. On a previous trip I headed from Lisbon straight to Algarve on A2. Has anyone done a road trip on the West Coast down to Algarve from Lisbon or Sintra? Is it worth the extra time?
