Many restaurants in Coimbra are closed on Sundays. A few are open on Rua da Sota, behind the prominent Astoria Hotel, on the west side off the main square, Largo da Portagem, next to the river. A side street is Rua de Azeiteras, a short block down Rua da Sota, which is an alleyway to the right. The restaurant A Cozina da Maria is just down Rua das Azeiteras on the right. It’s traditional, quaint, comfortable, and competent, with very good service and excellent food. About 10 tables. Bread, cheese, and olives (our mainstays) were very good. Roasted pork cheeks and stewed goat were outstanding. Local Fado singers were eating there. We consider this restaurant to be a lucky find, and well worth entering in Rick’s recommendations!
