We are spending 2 weeks in Portugal arriving Lisbon November 9. Our plan is to spend 4 nights in Lisbon, then pick up a rental car and drive to Sintra and spend 2 nights there. Our airbnb has parking. From Sintra we will work our way up to Porto (not sure of exact itinerary but will include Coimbra), then arrive in Porto and stay 3 nights. We plan to drop the car in Porto before we go to our accommodation. My question is where do we pick up a car in Lisbon and where do we drop it off in Porto to avoid driving in these cities? And is there a recommended car rental agency?
If you go to Autoeurope.com and start a reservation, you can see all the available city locations avaklable. Note down the addresses. Then go to Google Maps to see where the.addresses are in relation to where you're stahing. It is not hard to tell which locations are the bigger offices.
You can always pick up cars at airports but extra taxes and taxes come with picking up cars tnere. But there are seldom any drop off fees at airports.
We picked up our car at Lisbon airport and dropped of at Porto airport two weeks later.
Consider including Obidos, Evora, Coimbra as an itinerary. We did Sintra as a daytrip from Lisbon which was enough time there for us.
In both Lisbon and Porto we are staying in the center of the city so I guess we need to find an auto rental that is easy to get to with public transport and away from busy traffic. Perhaps the airports would work best.
Even before you check addresses from AutoEurope, they usually categorize the locations at airport, train station, or city center. Many European train stations are hubs for this type of service. You can also try the opposite order of searching. Go to Google Maps and search for "car rental near Lisbon," then zoom in to see if a major agent is close to a both a main road and a Metro station, for instance.
