We are staying in Lisbon and then driving South....Can we rent a car in the town or do we just pick the car up at the airport?
You can rent a car in Lisbon but depending on your location it may not be convenient.
If you're renting an automatic do it at the airport, others locations either don't have them or charge more.
Not exactly on point. To save hundreds of $$$, we flew into Madrid, drove to Lisbon airport, left car there in a lot for a couple of days at very reasonable cost, then retrieved it for a drive around Portugal and meandered back to Madrid. Easy to get to and from Lisbon center.
Obrigado................
Go to zestcarrental.com and you can compare the various options of pickup. We are renting a car in Lisbon, driving to Lagos and dropping off at Faro airport to fly home.
I found it was cheapest to pick up at the car rental's downtown office. Different companies will have different downtown locations. Picking up at airport cost about €15 more presumably because they have to deliver the car from downtown office to airport. And you can have car dropped off at your hotel for about €25. Pay attention to the drop-off fee. Dropping off in Faro is usually cheaper than dropping off in Lagos, unless the company you are dealing with has their office in Lagos.
Best to just go to the Zest site and try different combinations of companies and locations. I ended up booking from Rent-Car-4-Less via Zest and will pick up at their downtown office. They do not require a big deposit. Good luck.
My friend just rented a car at the airport with Sixt a few days ago, and it was a sh*tshow. We waited at least 1.5 hours to get the car; it was pretty frustrating, and also what seems unnecessary. It seems like anything to do with the airport is this way though, so try not to stress! I’d definitely try to rent at a different location.
