Recommendations for small town near Lisbon

My wife and I are planning a trip to Portugal for 3 weeks in February, 2026.
Our ideal is to find a small-ish town outside Lisbon, where we can stay for the entire 3 weeks, and then do day trips. Preferably a town that is within an hour from Lisbon on public transport (I understand that Lisbon is a large city!!) and that is less touristy.

Any recommendations?
Thanks!

When we were trying to decide where to stay between Porto and Lisbon, we first looked at a detailed map and glanced through Rick’s Portugal guidebook to get an idea of which places we wanted to visit.
We decided on Obidos, Fatima, Alcobaca, and Tomar to name a few (we were staying in Porto and Lisbon separately). I then went to Rome2rio.com and started plugging in the cities looking at travel times and ways to travel.
We ended up staying in Tomar, but we did have a car. The research will be the same for public transportation.
This could at least be a starting point for you.

I am sure Kathryn will mention Cascais

BTW, Lisbon is a city of many enclaves (think Boston) and you can stay in Lisbon but away from the hubbub

Yes, Cascais is very nice in February. The tourists are minimal and the sunny days are wonderful. On the same train line is also Estoril or even Carcavelos with a great beach.

If you have a car, Ericeira would also be quiet in February.
