I'll be staying in Funchal for about a week in late January and am looking for recommendations, especially for day tours to walk the levadas and visit other parts of the island,
I'll probably have time for two, maybe three, day tours, any suggestions? East side, west side? And which levada walk(s) do you recommend?
There are a lot of choices so any suggestions to help me focus would be great. I won't have a car and my starting/ending point will be Funchal
I visited Madeira ages ago and don't recall details, but I bought a book about levada walks and chose the Levada da Serra, which was very scenic. I took multiple trips by public bus. All were worthwhile, but you might start with the trip to Curral das Freiras.
Madeira's terrain is varied, and the island is really gorgeous. I'd ask locally, at your hotel or at the tourist office, because it would be better not to choose trips that have you sitting in traffic for extended lpriods. That wasn't an issue decades ago, but it might be now.
