Recomended stops

In September we are touring Portugal, and one of our stops is in Coimbra, and then Evora, this looks like over a three hour drive. Does anyone have any recommendations on possible stops, for local sight or lunch between these two places?

We stopped in Nazaré for a wonderful seafood lunch by the sea between these two cities.

Nazare is just a standard (slightly overrated) beach resort.

If you want to see something of real Portugal, you will be spoilt for choice if you take the inland road, as you will be passing some of the prettiest towns in Portugal, such as Tomar, Batalha and Alcobaca, all of which have magnificent town squares or convents and are all worth a couple of hours of your time. Stop at more than one if time permits, as I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

I’ll reiterate Jennifer’s suggestions. Something unique in all three towns. In Evora, try to have dinner at the tiny (12 seats at the counter) Botequim da Mouraria. Get there before opening - it’s well worth it.

We had a great lunch in Evora at the Cafe Museu de Arte Sacra de Se, round the back of the cathedral, set in a pleasant walled garden. Fantastic value and the lady who runs it was very helpful and speaks good English.
