Question

Hi,
My husband & I are planning a trip to Portugal in September/October. In our previous trips, we have prebooked a hotel when we arrived & the night before we leave. We are planning on arriving in Porto & leaving from Lisbon. We have then used sites like booking.com to book ahead. We have an itinerary but sometimes change it depending on suggestions from people. Is this a suitable way to travel in Portugal? Thank you.

Suki's right, high season can be a bit of a accommodations in scrum in Portugal. Do you have a rough idea of the itinerary and potential changes? There are a lot of options on booking.com but to a certain degree it depends on the size of the cities where you are going, your budget, quality of accommodations required (how many stars?) and amenities as well as your degree of intolerance for flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants method of traveling.

I went to Portugal mid-May to early June 2019. I booked hotels in January/February and even that early I didn't always get my first choice.

I use Hotels.com and always chose hotels with the option to cancel 24 hours in advance. Never had a problem with this site, and have canceled reservations with no issue. I also like that after 10 stays, you get one night free (based on average of nightly cost) I just saved $150+ on my reservation in Lisbon for our trip this year.
