so i see in rick's book that private individuals sometimes rent their extra rooms. i did this in germany in the past and loved being able to interact with the people and of course, it's more affordable.
is there a sign that people put in their windows? or how do i go about finding the, please?

That might have been possible ten years ago, but with the tourist boom in Lisbon, I can’t imagine this still happening. After living here four years, I’ve never seen a sign like that.

I have only ever seen one place near a beach on the Algarve saying “quartos, rooms, zimmer” over the past 20 years of visiting various regions in Portugal. It’s not as common as in say Croatia. Online booking has taken over.
