Private driver and train for one day, Porto to Pinhão? Or do a tour?

We will be staying in Porto for 4 full days on an independent travel trip. I am trying to figure out an itinerary for at least a portion of the trip. I think I would like to venture out to Pinhão but it is a 4+ hour trip with public transit (if they even run in October).
My questions…
Would you recommend traveling that far in the Douro and is Pinhão worth the trip?
If so, do you have a private driver to drive for the day?
Would we be better to take a train part way and then a cab to go to Pinhao?
Or would we be better off doing one of the small group trips that don’t go as far but include a meal and boat trip?

I did a small group van tour that wen to Pinhao, visited two different quintas for wine tasting, did the one hour boat trip and lunch in a nice restaurant. I used Cooltours Oporto. I am not a big fan of organized tours but found this one very enjoyable, informative and relaxing.

I’ve done both a day tour and took the train to Pinhao on my own. However, when I took the train, I stayed a couple of nights in Pinhao. While I enjoy the train trip (I’ve done it twice now), I don’t think I would do it as a day trip. I also used Cool Tour Oporto and thought it was a great intro to the Douro.
